TV Cabinet Makeover

This is my first attempt at writing a blog and my first attempt using Annie Sloan paint.  So you might ask how I got started?  I took a painting class from my new friends at Simpler Times Design in Parker, CO.  Susan and Connie are a perfect match to teach the classes and I had so much fun that I spent $$$ (can't put the actual amount on my blog or my husband would need CPR) for paint and books and paint brushes.  Let's just say I was excited and motivated....

My project is a TV cabinet I bought in 1995.  Does that make it an antique?  I started by taking all the hardware off.  Annie Sloan says in her books that you can leave the hardware on and just paint over it but I decided because of the way the doors slide, I needed to remove the hardware and make sure they would glide easily when I put them back on.

First lesson I had to learn the hard way; be sure and mark the doors and hardware!  When you go to put the pieces back on you will find that every piece is just a little different.  My husband finally came in and helped me out otherwise, I would still be trying to get the 'right' fit.  So here are the before pictures.....let the painting begin!

I started off by painting the entire unit with Annie Sloan Provence.  Once I had the Provance (two coats) covering the cabinet both inside and outside, I added a stencil in Annie Sloan Arle.  After it was good and dry (24 hours),  I knocked off some of the paint with my sander.  I could have used water and a sponge but I decided to take it down to the bare wood in a few places so I just ran the sander over the cabinet.  It took me maybe 15 minutes to get the look I was aiming for and I was ready for the next step.

I went back and added more Arle to give the unit a bit more color.

I decided to add a coat of crackle then one more coat of the Provance.

I sanded a bit more and then decided to add a few stencils on the sides.
This is so much fun I didn't want the project to end!
I put on new door knobs.

I put peg board on the back of the cabinet and started loading it up with all my fun painting supplies.  I had to add a few extras like my 'sweet' musical heart from my best friend and sister then I had to add a Dean Martin CD in honor of our mother who taught us to love painting.

And finally I waxed my new Art Cabinet with Annie Sloan Clear Wax.

This was a really fun painting experience and it's so easy to use the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.  I can't wait to start my next project!

Be sure and subscribe to my blog so you can see all my projects!  I would love to hear from you!
